What is Automate.io?

Automate.io is an easy-to-use workflow automation tool that lets you connect the web apps you use every day. You can pass data through them and automate repetitive tasks without having to code or relying on developers.  

For example, let’s say you regularly run ads on Facebook, and want to collect the leads onto a CRM like Salesforce. You can manually download the leads from Facebook and export them to your Salesforce, or you can have Automate.io do that for you, saving you time and effort. 

Common terms used in Automate.io

Now, let's learn some common terms that you'll come across while working with Automate.io.


An App is any application you use on Automate.io. There are two kinds of Apps on Automate.io. 

  1. Third-party Apps: These are the web apps you know very well. They carry data. Example: Gmail, MailChimp, etc.

  2. Built-in Apps: These are apps that are built by Automate.io. They can be used to manipulate data like text, numbers. etc. to make your workflows more useful and powerful. Example: Formatter, Filter, etc.

Note: Some apps on Automate.io are marked as 'Premium'. To use these apps in your Bots, you'll need to have a paid plan. 


A Bot is an automated workflow between your apps.

Let's say, in the case mentioned above, you connected Facebook Lead Ads and Salesforce using Automate.io to collect all your Facebook leads automatically onto your Salesforce CRM. This is a Bot. 

Or, say you connected your Shopify store and QuickBooks account so that you want to create an invoice on QuickBooks for every order created on your Shopify store. This is a Bot as well.

Simply put, a Bot is an automation you create on Automate.io. You can add as many apps as you want in your Bot depending on what you want to accomplish. 

In the Facebook Lead Ads - Salesforce case, you can add another app, say MailChimp, to send follow-up emails to your Facebook leads after collecting them in your Salesforce CRM. 

Note that every Bot needs at least 2 apps—one Trigger app and one or more Action apps.


A Trigger is the event which starts the Bot. So, it’s always the first event in the Bot. 

For example, if you have a Bot which sends your Typeform submissions to a Mailchimp list, 'New Typeform Submission' is the Trigger, and Typeform is the Trigger app.


An Action is the event a Bot performs. It occurs as a response to the Trigger in your Bot. 

For example, if you are running a Bot which sends Slack messages for new Jira tickets, 'Send Slack message' is the Action, and Slack is the Action app.

A Bot can consist of more than one action. The actions are performed one by one in the specified order immediately after the Trigger happens. Click here to know about how actions in your account are counted.


On the main screen of your dashboard, based on the apps you choose, you will see a huge list of all the possible Bots you can create on Automate.io. These will help you get started immediately to automate basic tasks.

At the top of your dashboard, you have tabs such as BOTS, ACTIVITY, and APPS which keep a record of everything you do. 


The BOTS section shows the list of all the Bots you have created. Here, you can also pause, edit or delete your Bots. 


The ACTIVITY section keeps a log of everything that happens with your Bots. Click here to know how to make use of it for troubleshooting common errors. 


The APPS section shows all the apps you've connected to Automate.io. Here, you can delete any apps you've connected, or reconnect them, or even add new apps.
